On Firday (Aug.13) WizKid dropped the remix of his hit song ‘Essence’ after only one day’s notice. The Afrobeats superstar hinted “something special” was coming in a tweet before announcing the official remix featuring the “stay” pop star, who stamped it “the song of the summer” on his Instagram.

“Essence” featuring Nigeria’s fast-rising singer, Tems, was released in October last year from WizKid’s album Made in Lagos and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in July at No. 82. Since then, the track has been steadily climbing the tally rising to its current position of No. 54.

The track was also included in Spotify’s Song of the Summer playlist in June 2021, and in Barack Obama’s favourite songs of 2020 playlist.

“That song has become emblematic of being back outside,” Tunji Balogun, who signed WizKid to RCA in 2017 told Billboard. “Then, a narrative on the internet started about the song being the song of the summer — and we took that energy and ran with it.”

The Nigerian Superstar is set to hit the road on his “Made in Lagos” tour. The 17-date trek kicks off on Sept. 10 in Boston and hits major cities like Brooklyn, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Miami through October before closing out with a pair of Canadian dates in Toronto and Montreal in January.
