Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai Wins Women’s Olympic 3000m Steeplechase Gold

Peruth Chemutai has become Uganda’s first female Olympic gold medallist after winning women’s 3,000m steeplechase gold at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

The 22-year-old won gold in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time on 9:01.45 on Wednesday beating Courtney Frerichs of the U.S. and Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng who finished 9:04.79 and 9:05.39 respectively.

Chemutai’s victory is the third Olympic gold won by Uganda in any sport — after John Akii-Bua’s 400m hurdles win in 1972 and Stephen Kiprotich’s victory in the 2012 marathon.
