The pop stars announced their split Wednesday night (Nov.17) via Instagram in a joint statement they each posted to their respective stories.
“Hey guys, we’ve decide to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as human is stronger than ever ❤️” the statement began. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”
“We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward ❤️❤️❤️ Camila and Shawn,” concluded the statement.
The Pair’s friendship dates back to 2014 when Mendes and Cabello’s then-group Fifth Harmony both opened for Austin Mahone on tour and the two released ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ in November 2015.
After being friends for several years, the duo officially started dating in July 2019 and released their ‘Señorita’ duet at the same time.
They made their first major public appearance as a couple that same year in August at the MTV Video Music Awards, where they performed their ‘Señorita’ song.
In November, the couple also performed the Grammy-nominated hit again at the American Music Awards where it won an award for collaboration of the year.
Mendes, 23, and Cabello, 24, quarantined together at the ‘Havana’ hit singer’s parents’ home in Miami during the Covid-19 pandemic which the Canadian singer described as a “really beautiful experience.”
“It was the first time I was quiet and I was able to be like, ‘What is happening in this world and how do I feel about it and what can I do and where does this go from here?” Mendes told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in an interview last year. “That was the best gift I think I’ve ever, ever been given in my whole life.”
They celebrated their two-year anniversary together earlier this year on social media with Cabello writing “Happy anniversary Kuko ❤️ here’s to more joy, more friendship, and more love ❤️.” while Mendes wrote “Happy 2 years my baby ♥️.”
The pair was last publicly seen together on November 3 as they enjoyed a relaxing trip at the beach in Miami, Florida.
