Ever since the omicron variant of COVID-19 surfaced, jokes referring to it as the Omarion variant have been on the rise.

And now, the R&B artist also known as Omari Ishmael Grandberry has addressed the jokes in a series of TikTok posts about the confusion with his name and the latest variant.

“Hi, this is Omarion. I am an artist — not a variant,” he began in the first of three TikTok clips posted January 1. “So please be aware that if you just so happen to run into me on the street, you don’t have to isolate for 5 days.”

The 37-year-old singer, who was the frontman for R&B group B2K captioned the clip with his 2005 hit single “Touch.”

He continued: “While it’s important not to touch me and keep your distance, cause you know that’s how it’s supposed to be, you don’t need a negative test to dance to my music,” he says. “I want to tell everybody stay safe and be good to one another.”

The TikTok videos have since went viral amassing more than 100,000 views each. The humorous clips also made their way to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The “Post to Be” hitmaker later appeared to deliver a similar but altered message for New York City’s New Years Rockin’ Eve — this time with a message from his legal counsel. He reiterated, “I know there has been a lot of confusion online recently, so my lawyers asked me to read this: I, Omarion, am a musician and entertainer — you knew that — not a variant, okay.”

“The last time I had to do this was in 2000 when everyone confused Y2K with B2K,” he says. “That ain’t how it’s supposed to be, but seriously, I want to wish you all a happy and safe new year’s. Peace.”

The singer’s clarifications comes after a recent social media trend where internet users have playfully talked about how they got the “Omarion variant” playing hit songs like Post to Be and Ice Box and dancing some of the singer’s signature moves. Comments include “symptoms may include but not limited to dancing, rhythm, passionate love making”.

Meanwhile, Omicron variant has contributed to a spike in Covid-19 cases worldwide as the most contagious strain of the virus that we’ve seen thus far. Recent studies have also suggested that this variant may cause less severe disease than the Delta variant.

“It’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen, even at the peak of the prior surges of Covid,” Dr. James Phillips, who works in Washington, DC, told CNN last week.

Omarion has released six solo albums, two of them, O and 21, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 and like he says on TikTok, is notably not a variant.

He recently teamed up with fellow R&B veterans Bow Wow and Soulja Boy for the 2021 single, “EX.”
