Cardi B is set host the 2021 American Music Award that will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 21.
The “WAP” rapper is also in for three nominations at this year’s show – favorite female hip-hop artist and two nods for “Up” as favorite music video and favorite hip-hop song.
Cardi joins a long line of hip-hop stars to host or co-host the AMAs. Others include M.C. Hammer, Will Smith, Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Sean Combs and Pitbull .

A five-time AMA winner performed ‘I Like It’ at the AMAs in 2018 with J Balvin and Bad Bunny and also made history during her last AMAs appearance, becoming the first female rapper to win Favorite Hip-Hop Song twice.
“When I received the invite to host the AMAs, I was so excited,” said the multiplatinum rapper, who’s hot off back-to-back No. 1 singles with “WAP” and “Up.” “I’m ready to bring my personality to the AMAs stage!Thank you to Jesse Collins, ABC and MRC for making this happen.”
Referring to the “dynamic” performer’s “infectious energy,” AMAs showrunner Jesse Collins added, “She will excite the viewers, push the limits and deliver a show that will be remembered forever!”
This year’s award show will also be the fifth consecutive year that a Black female star will front the AMAs. Cardi B follows actress Tracee Ellis Ross (2017-18), R&B star Ciara (2019) and actress Taraji P. Henson (2020).
Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo who’s known for her hit single ‘drivers license’ heads into the 2021 AMAs with a leading seven nominations including Artist of the Year and New Artist of The Year. The Weeknd is next with a half-dozen nominations going up against Rodrigo in the artist of the year category along with BTS, Ariana Grande, Drake and Taylor Swift. The “save your tears” star is followed by Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Giveon with five apiece.
Taylor Swift, who currently holds the record for the most awarded artist in AMA history, could further extend her streak. She is nominated for three awards total, including favourite pop album for ‘evermore’.
It has been revealed that this year’s AMAs will have new categories that is; favourite trending song, favourite gospel artist and favourite Latin duo or group.
Rapper Pop Smoke, who was killed in 2020, is nominated in three categories, including favorite hip-hop album and favorite hip-hop artist, and could win his first award posthumously.
According to Billboard, nominees are based on key fan interactions – as reflected on the Billboard charts – including streaming, album sales, song sales and radio airplay. These measurements are tracked by Billboard and its data partner MRC Data, and cover the time period Sept. 25, 2020, through Sept. 23, 2021.
