On Wednesday, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced that Britney Spears will not be facing charges after allegations of misdemeanor battery from her housekeeper last month.
The 39-year-old pop star had been accused by an employee of slapping a phone out of her hand during a dispute on Aug. 16 over the veterinary care of the singer’s dogs. This prompted an investigation by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office after the employee filed a report with the office for alleged misdemeanor battery, indicating damage to the phone’s screen protector. However, the housekeeper didn’t have any visible injuries.
A possible misdemeanor battery charge against Spears was declined based “upon insufficient evidence that a crime had occurred and the lack of injury to the housekeeper or significant damage to the phone,” according to a press release from the DA’s office.
Immediately after the allegations then, the singer’s attorney Mathew Rosengart called the incident “overblown” and “manufactured,” saying, “Anyone can make an accusation but this should have been closed immediately.”
Now in a new statement, Spears’ lawyer Rosengart says, “To its credit, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has now, not surprisingly, formally rejected the misdemeanor allegation against Britney Spears, which the Sheriff’s Department itself has acknowledged was a ‘very minor’ or ‘extremely minor’ incident, even as alleged, and there also was no striking and obviously no injuries.”
“As I have previously-stated, this was nothing more than sensationalized-tabloid fodder — an overblown ‘he said, she said’ regarding a cell phone. If this involved Jane Doe rather than Britney Spears it would not have been pursued or covered at all.”
“This should never have made it this far and we are glad the DA’s Office has done the right thing. Sadly, it is apparent that some have learned nothing from the past, and we sincerely hope the media and others will be more respectful of Ms. Spears in the future.”
According to TMZ’s report the incident occurred after the housekeeper took Spears’ dogs to the veterinarian. However when she returned, TMZ reports that the pop star confronted her and they argued about the dog’s well-being.
Spears is currently in court battling to have her father, Jamie Spears, removed as her conservator after 13 years, claiming to have been “abused” by her father’s longstanding control over her career and personal life.
